Joy Black, 79, of Humphrey passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Crestpark of Stuttgart.
Joy was born June 13, 1943, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Quinton and Jewel Lockhart. She was a 1962 graduate of Humphrey High School and member of Humphrey Baptist Church.
Joy and Jay married June 30, 1963, and would have celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary this year. They worked together for over 42 years from farming up to 1400 acres by themselves to owning Sunshine Fly Boys Ag Service. She was a published poet and for several years was ranked in the top two percent of Poets in America. She was a farmer’s wife often seen driving grain carts and their trucks to the rice mill. She liked cross stitching, calligraphy and gardening, and was a collector of owls.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Quinta Cruthis; and a brother, Buddy Lockhart.
Survivors are her husband, Jay Black; three daughters, Lynne Black, Greta Black Mittman (Michael) and Jara “JJ” Miller (Corey); brother-in-law, Al Black (Sharon); sisters, Jane Lockhart Reeves and Maribeth Lockhart Farrester; sister-in-law, Nancy Lockhart; six grandchildren, Jared, Allyssa, Cody, Olin, Rachel and Molly; and three great-grandchildren, James and Jasper Williams and Theodore Wall.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Turpin Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Sunshine Cemetery.
