Christopher Paul Maxwell

Christpher Paul Maxwell, age 75, passed away suddenly at his home on Jan. 27, 2025. Chris was born in Peru, Nebraska, on Oct. 25, 1949, to Lila Halverson Maxwell and Paul Clarke Maxwell.

Chris was raised by his grandmother, Alice Maxwell, who was the daughter of a Methodist preacher and his grandfather, Dr. Paul C. Maxwell, who was a professor at the University of Peru at the time of his death. At that time, Chris, his dad and his grandmother moved to Buffalo, New York.

Chris graduated from Lancaster High School in New York in 1968. It was there that he met his lifelong friends, Mark and Sam Wick of Craig, Colo.

After graduation, Chris joined the United States Air Force and served from Feb. 10, 1969, to Nov. 24, 1974. At the time he was a senior airman during the Vietnam War. He also served 12 months in Goose Bay, Canada, as a Liquid Fuels Specialist. Anytime he talked about that time, he never failed to mention how cold it was.

When it was time for his discharge, they asked him where he wanted to go. He would always say Tampa, Fla., because that was where his mom, brothers and sister were. However, he ultimately ended up at Jacksonville Air Force Base.

After finishing time in the military, he bought a bar on Main Street in Little Rock and named it Maxwell’s Coffee Shop, which he sold sometime around 1990-91.

Chris later worked as a waterbed specialist for Big Sur Waterbeds before deciding to open a furniture moving business, which became quite successful. After selling that he bought a dump truck and named it Purple Haze. He later sold Purple Haze and because Director of the street department for the City of Stuttgart where he worked for six years.

“Apart from being a proud business owner and having much success throughout his life, Chris enjoyed spending his time fishing, lounging by the pool, going to the beach, riding his motorcycle, watching sports (Go Hogs) and spending time with the little ones.”

During this time, he met the love of his life. He married Vicky on Oct. 3, 1992, and they remained married for 32 wonderful years. Vicky wasn’t so sure in the beginning that he was truly the love of her life, but her friends fell in love with him, and they wouldn’t give her any peace until she said yes.

It wasn’t uncommon to hear the song “Going to the Chapel” playing on the radio throughout the day after being requested by her friends, Denise, Patty or Carol.

Chris was working at Hasty Drake Duck Club at the time of his death.

Chris is survived by his wife of 32 years, Vicky; one son, Paul Clarke Maxwell; one grandson, Paul Clarke Maxwell III; granddaughter, Elizabeth Maxwell; five brothers and sisters, Maxine Coscia Thompson, Wesely (Karen) Coscia, Robyn Coscia, Jennifer Coscia and Joey (Debbie) Coscia; seven nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Chris stepped up and helped raise Vicky’s sister Yvonne’s three kids, Josh, Jason and April. He had seven great-nephews and three great-nieces who recliner.

Chris was blessed to have special friends Byrum and Kerry McCune who introduced him to Vicky, and he would tell them almost immediately after meeting her that he was smitten. He spent the next two years pursuing her and even though it took that long, he never gave up.

He is loved and will be missed.

There will be a memorial celebration of life for Chris at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Turpin Funeral Home.

A celebration of life gathering will follow at the Maxwell’s residence, 1022 Hwy. 276 in Stuttgart.
